A History of excellence
Tuffnell Plumbing Drainage & Gas has been proudly serving the Nelson and Tasman regions since 1915. Family owned and operated by The Tuffnell family up until 2007, and then The Harris family from 2007-2017 .
Since 2017, Tuffnell Plumbing Drainage & Gas has been owned and operated by Chris and Emma Downey and remains a family Business, with a permanent staff of 20 employees, who have dedicated themselves to maintaining and building upon the history of top quality workmanship and prompt, reliable service. Utilising the latest technology, materials and trade practices on offer.

Chris Downey - Managing Director
Chris has achieved the highest qualifications the New Zealand industry has, he is not only a Certifying Plumber, Gasfitter and Drainlayer, but Chris has gone on to achieve an IQP Backflow Protection License and Limited Electrical License to compliment his knowledge and skill base, and as an affiliated Master Plumbers Association of NZ member, you can be assured we work to the highest standards possible.
Along with these qualifications Chris has over 23 years experience within the Plumbing & Civil industries, and has committed himself to a quality of work that he can be proud to stand behind. Chris is a strong believer in training and advancing Tradesman & Apprentices, and in doing this provides an excellent work environment for these apprentices to thrive & learn with all facets of the industry. Backed by this passion & experience, you can be sure the work completed by our team is completed to a very high standard and up to code.

Jed Smith – Plumbing Manager
Jed has over 25 years' experience in the plumbing, gas and Renewable Technologies fields. Originating from the UK, Jed served a traditional apprenticeship in plumbing, moving on to do gas and then later renewable technologies such as Biomass, Heat Pumps and Solar. Jed qualified to the highest level in the UK across all disciplines including underfloor heating and Central Heating design and sizing. Jed ran his own plumbing company in the UK until a career change led him in a new direction with teaching and assessing plumbers and apprentices.
Jed also spent a number of years in Managerial and Leadership roles, obtaining a Masters Degree (MBA) in Business, and a Diploma in Business Consultancy (DipMC). Jed also was a registered Programme Manager in the UK holding his PRINCEII qualification in Project Management. Jed has now combined his managerial experience with his plumbing knowledge and prides himself on his high levels of customer service and new business development.
John Richards - Drainage Manager
John has amassed over 18 years’ experience and expertise in both the Private and Civil Drainage Sectors, and completing an extensive NZQA Business Management Course in recent years. In this time John has covered all aspects of Drainage from Domestic house installations, Septic Tank systems, wastewater treatment installation and servicing, right through to City Council network Drainage maintenance. John is a Registered Licensed Drainlayer accredited by the Plumber Drainlayers & Gasfitters Board of NZ.
John also has plenty of enthusiasm and commitment for his customers & Projects, followed up with a lively sense of humor and communication style. John takes great pride in the Drainage Staff under his Leadership and provides them a safe, healthy, positive and results driven environment to work in, which ultimately results in a superior product for our clients, and a strong Team culture.
